What to bring on a “Best Walk”?
Shoes
You could join all walks wearing sport trainers or tennis shoes. Light walking boots are the most comfortable for a longer distance over gravel and dirt road tracks.
Clothes
We recommend to wear some small layers, as temperatures might change during the morning when the sun comes up. It is possible to wear shorts as non of the walks require to scramble through thick and sharp needled bushes. In sunny days we recommend a hat and to use UV/ sun protection, factor 30 or higher.
Water proof
We do walk in light, drizzling rain. In case you see cloudy skies, please bring a light wind-stopper or rain jacket. Check the weather forecast at www.meteo.pt. We find this one reliable as well: www.yr.no
Extras
We recommend to bring a small back pack to carry a bottle of water (at least 0,5 LTR pp) some fruit/snack and to store extra clothing. In case you use any medication, please bring that as well. It is recommended to walk with both hands free. Oh yes, please bring the €5 pp in cash..
Safety on the walks & are these walks suitable for me?
Safety
When you participate in our walks we assume that you have some minimal walking experience. We assume that you are aware of the risks any outdoor and physical activity involves for people with specific conditions such as asthma and heart or nervous disorders. In the event that there is an emergency the walking guide will assist you. He/she carries a First Aid Kit and mobile phone, and will be able to get in touch with local rescue services.
Social
We offer these walks as social trips. Highly competitive hikers should look for alternatives or hire one of our guides.
Each walk has 2 short breaks of 10-15 minutes which will be on an interesting view point. Here, the walking guide will briefly inform you on the local cultures, flora and fauna.
As we will frequently walk with groups of 10 till 30 participants we suggest to use these stops for refreshments, taking photo´s and changing clothes. This will help to keep the group together.
Fitness levels & technical terrain level
Most of the walks require a basic or moderate level of fitness. We assume that you have some minimal walking experience and that you are able to walk 3 hours with only 2 short stops. The walking pace is rather social, and definitely not competitive.
The walking route covers most of time off-road- and dirt tracks with loose stones, gravel and rocks. The terrain is frequently undulating, with now and then climbs and descends with a gravel surface.
We strongly recommend that in case you haven´t walked for a long time that you first do a medical check with your GP or local health center.
For each walk you will see a rating that corresponds with the list here in the right column on this page or see the list on a separate page.
