Description

This circular, guided walk will lead you through the small back streets of Mexilhoeira Grande, along the hidden water channels (levadas) and will turn back to the train station, following the shores of the Ria de Alvor lagoon.

Meeting point

Start & finish is at the train station Mexilhoeira Grande. The train station lies about 300 meter outside the village. You´ll find Mexilhoeira Grande on the N125 between Portimão and Lagos. Just 300 meters East from the village entrance, is a sign “Estação” towards the train station, which is located south of the N125. The train station is about 50 meter away from the N125. Terrain

Most of the walk is flat, there is 1 small climb into the village. The terrain is a mixture of asphalt, gravel roads, and single tracks along the water channels. There is little shade, so bring on a sunny day a hat please.

Public transport

From the West-Algarve (Lagos & Meia Praia)

There is a train starting from Lagos at 10h27, and arriving in Mexilhoeira Grande at 10h42. The bus from Lagos to Mexilhoeira Grande is less attractive and starts at 09h45 and arrives at 10h05.

From the East-Algarve (Tavira, Faro, Boliqueime, Albufeira - Ferreiras, Algoz, Alcantarilha, Silvs, Ferragudo & Portimão)

There is a train starting from Tavira at 08h23, Faro at 09h14, Albufeira - Ferreiras at 09h45, Portimão at 10h33 and will arrive in Mexilhoeira Grande at 10h42.
For the return journey, the train leaves at 14h16 into Faro direction. Check here the CP Train Times (PDF).

There is a bus leaving from Portimão centre at 10h10 and will arrive in Mexilhoeira Grande at 10h30. The return bus will leave Mexilhoeira Grande at + 14h00 or take the next one at + 15h00 if you want to explore the Ria de Alvor a bit more.

This is the “Frotazul” bus between Portimão and Lagos. Portimão doesn´t have a Bus Terminal, but buy your ticket in the shop at the Largo do Dique (map) and ask from where the bus departs (probably from here). The bus from Portimão follows the N125 and turns into Figueira to the right. Afterwards it enters Mexilhoeira Grande from the North. Leave the bus just before the junction (map) with the N125 which is the last bus stop in the village, just before turning onto the N125. From here walk into Portimão direction (East) and follow the sign “Estação”. See the Frotazul Bus Times to check the times.
