The western Algarve is slightly cooler than the rest of the Algarve due to its location closer to the Atlantic Ocean. It is also less populated compared with the middle Algarve where the nightlife hotspot Albufeira and major golf destination Vilamoura dominate the landscapes.

Luggage Transfers

The routes start at your hotel and end at the next hotel. Your luggage will be transported and should you wish to skip one day, we can also transport you and your bike to the next hotel.

GPS routes & POI´s

You will use our GPS route following double and single tracks, through dense forests and open grasslands. Daily distances are on average around 50-60 km with a shorter day whilst climbing to the Serra de Monchique.

Our detailed GPS routes show you where to stop for a coffee or lunch and where you´ll find local points of interest.

Itinerary to The Best of the West in 5 Self-Guided Riding Days

Day 1: From Lagos to Silves

Leave the bustling Marina behind and ride this relatively short and flat route to Silves. It is a sightseeing route with visits to the centre of Portimão and riding along the river Rio Arade to the Moorish bridge in the centre of Silves. An extra loop to the estuary of Ria do Alvor to see flamingoes is available and will add approx. 6 km.

45km +378hm – 34% unpaved

Day 2: From Silves to Monchique

Although a relatively short route, it is a demanding climb up to the Serra de Monchique. The Mt Foia with 900 mtrs altitude can be skipped but on a clear day, the views are rewarding and not to miss.

46km +1200hm – 11% unpaved (a beautiful off-road route with 65% unpaved and 1700hm is also available at no extra cost!)

Day 3: From Monchique to Aljezur

This remote fast-flowing off-road route leads you to the Natural Park of Costa Vicentina where the extra loop stops at one of the most scenic beaches on the west coast, Praia do Amoreira.

Day 4: From Aljezur to Sagres

Today you are riding on the edge of Europe along the wild west coast of Portugal. The extra loop stops at the iconic lighthouse of Sagres, a charming place with lots of maritime history.

Day 5: From Sagres to Lagos

You will leave the west coast and ride parallel to the south coast towards Lagos. Gradually you will see more buildings, but there are still many single tracks over the cliffs leading back to Lagos.
